FiO / LS 2014 offers a "Smorgasbord" of Outstanding Topics

by Shamsul Arafin

I am really amazed at the number of FiO / LS 2014 topics that will be covered, ranging from Optical Design and Instrumentation to Optics in Biology and Medicine to Optics in Information Processing to Integrated Photonics. Each specific topic has been further divided into many relevant subtopics, highlighting the cutting-edge research and recent breakthroughs in optics and laser sciences by bringing together world-class researcher and scientists.

Among several sessions in Laser Science category, I am particularly excited about the Semiconductor Nanooptics invited talks. More specifically, the invited talk titled as Ultrashort-pulse Generation Using VECSELs and MIXSELs by Prof. Ursula Keller from ETH Zürich, Switzerland will highlight the latest results on high-power ultrafast semiconductor lasers based on optically-pumped VECSELs and MIXSELs. She will also discuss how power scaling with ps and fs pulses as well as with the excellent noise performance makes this type of semiconductor lasers highly attractive for many real-world applications.

The Laser Science conference also presents an invited talk on Quantum-dot Microcavity Lasers with Super-radiant Coupling and Non-classical Light Emission by Prof. Frank Jahnke from University of Bremen, Germany. In fact, Prof. Chow together with with Prof. Jhanke published a review paper on this topic this year in Light: Science & Applications where they describe that how super-radiant behavior can be utilized in semiconductor quantum dots (QD) and how such QD-based active medium can be used to realize ultralow-threshold micro-cavity lasers, providing non-classical light for applications in quantum information. I am eagerly waiting to learn how super-radiant coupling effects leading to a giant photon bunching phenomenon can be identified in ensemble QDs inside a three-dimensional optical resonator.

I have made sure to add these interesting talks to my schedule: Recent Progress in Plasmonic and Metallic Cavity Semiconductor Nano-lasers by Prof. Cun-Zheng Ning from Arizona State University, USA; Agile Silicon Photonic Systems for Sensing and Telecommunications by Prof. Axel Scherer from California Institute of Technology, USA; Novel Effects in Photonic Crystal Cavities by Thomas F Krauss from University of St Andrews, UK. I have already added them to my itinerary using the conference planner and will be sure to look for these in the Mobile App when that becomes available.

There are less than 2 weeks until the FiO / LS 2014 kicks off on 19th October in Tuscon, AZ! If you have not registered already, please do so now. You do not want to miss the opportunity to hear the latest optics and laser development news from some of the best speakers worldwide.
