Visionary Session Recaps

From VR to AR to "Mixed Reality"

Right now, virtual reality (VR) and augmented reality (AR) largely occupy different domains: VR seeks to immerse users in an entirely separate world, while AR overlays additional data, images and experiences onto the real one. But Scott McEldowney (above) of Oculus Research, USA — who gave one of three “Visionary Speakers” keynotes that kicked off the Monday session of Frontiers in Optics — sees a future in which those strands will come together. Devices almost as lightweight as an ordinary pair of eyeglasses will someday “offer AR, and VR, and everything in-between,” said McEldowney. “And we’re going to wear them all day long.” [more]

A Practical Quantum Computer

Quantum computers are capable of solving some computational problems that are believed to be intractable using conventional computers. Recent progress in the development of high quality quantum bits and their successful manipulation have led to significant confidence that a moderate scale quantum computer can be constructed on leading physical platforms such as trapped ions and superconducting circuits. In his Visionary talk on Monday, Jungsang Kim answered the question — what will lead us to a practical quantum computer? He explained the prospect of constructing a scalable quantum processor via trapped ytterbium ions and the progress made to date. By leveraging the latest optical technology — micro-fabricated ion traps, optical micro-machines, advanced optical modulators and laser systems — Kim’s presentation moved us forward to the ultimate goal; a scalable quantum computer.

He summarized by showing the audience the latest progress toward deployable ion traps and the integration of the vacuum system requirements with the laser and optical system requirements. All of this could lead to a full ion trap quantum computer in a box while sharing his vision on what scientists could do with quantum computing systems that are comprised of over 50 qubits and greater than 1000 gates, possibly as soon as 2020.

A Perfect Day for Bananafish

Well, not really. But, with complimentary breakfast served before the plenary, a free pizza lunch in the exhibit hall and light hor d'oeuvres at the evening reception, Tuesday is a pretty great day for eats at the conference. (Of course, the networking with other attendees is the real benefit here.)

Free Continental Breakfast
07:00 – 08:00, International Ballroom

Complimentary coffee and pastries will be served prior to the Plenary Session on Tuesday. (And, just a heads up: we're offering it again on Wednesday before the Visionary Talks.)

Pizza Lunch
12:00 – 13:00, Science & Industry Showcase, Columbia

Join your colleagues for a free pizza lunch. This is a great opportunity to meet the exhibitors and OSA Journal Editors.

The FiO + LS Conference Reception
18:30 – 20:30, International Ballroom Center, Terrace Level

Plenary room by day; DC hotspot by night. Enjoy light hors d'oeuvres and beverages, then rock out with our DJ's eclectic playlist. Even better; the reception is open to all registrants, including Exhibit Hall Only.

Tuesday: A Sampling of Special Events

Meet OSA's Journal Editors
11:45 – 12:45, Science Showcase Theater, Columbia

Optics Letters and Optics Express are celebrating anniversaries, so stop by for some pizza, cake and refreshments. You'll have the opportunity to meet OSA Publishing's Editors-in-Chief, Deputy Editors and Associate Editors too.

Environmental Sensing Technical Group Networking Event
16:30 – 17:00, International Terrace, Terrace Level

Members of the OSA Environmental Sensing Technical Group are invited to attend and connect with others who share an interest in the field. Refreshments will be provided. [R.S.V.P.]

DLS Annual Business Meeting
17:30 – 18:30, Holmead East, Lobby Level

Help define the operations of the DLS and the LS conference. The DLS officers will report on the activities of the past year and on plans for the future. Questions will be taken from the floor.
