Four Hot Topics Featured in Wide-Ranging Presentations at FiO 2019

by OSA Communications

During the week of 15 September 2019, more than 1,100 attendees including science and industry leaders will converge on the Marriott Wardman Park in Washington, D.C., U.S.A., for the Frontiers in Optics and APS/DLS Laser Science (FiO + LS) conference.

If you are mapping out your schedule for this premier event, make time for be wide-ranging presentations on more than 30 optics and photonics topics in four broad thematic areas: Autonomous Systems, Nanophotonics and Plasmonics, Virtual Reality and Augmented Vision, as well as Quantum Technologies – the first-ever crosscutting theme at an FiO + LS conference.

Each of these four themes includes an all-invited program of panel discussions and is anchored by a 45-minute talk offered by a Visionary Speaker.

Though these engaging presentations are the heart of FiO + LS, there is so much more content to explore including the two plenary sessions which are among the conference’s most-anticipated highlights.

The first plenary talk will take place Tuesday, 17 September, when Nobel Laureate and 2013 OSA President Dr. Donna Strickland recounts her work with fellow Nobel Laureate Gérard Mourou using chirped pulse amplification to develop a laser powerful enough to exceed the electric fields inside of an atom – giving unprecedented control over electrons and enabling the generation of light at extreme wavelengths.

The second plenary talk will be on Wednesday, 18 September, when Dr. Ronald Hanson discusses “The Dawn of a Quantum Internet” and describes how future quantum networks may harness the unique features of entanglement—the weird, enduring connection between two particles, regardless of their distance apart. This work has led researchers to the brink of realizing the first multi-node quantum networks. Hanson will describe the concepts, current status and prospects of quantum Internet research.

But if you are ever at a loss for what to see and do, stop by the OSA Booth next to registration, near the hard-to-miss digital wall, where there will be special programming, information and giveaways to help maximize your FiO experience.

On Monday evening, you also have the opportunity to join your colleagues for the hottest ticket in town—the FiO + LS Awards Ceremony and Reception, held at the Carnegie Institution for Science.

Tuesday and Wednesday of the conference, make time to visit the Science & Industry Showcase, which will include more than 500 poster sessions. A select number of these posters will be presented as e-posters, which provide deeper on-line discussion on special topics. A select number of posters will also be highlighted in Rapid-Fire Oral Presentations at the Showcase Theater.

And, as always, stop by the OSA Member Zone on the exhibit floor (Booth 209) where you can meet OSA staff, learn more about publications, conferences and meetings, and find out about our membership offerings and opportunities.

We also encourage you to stay up to date and engaged with FiO + LS before, during and after the conference through OSA’s social media channels. Follow us and tag us on Twitter, Facebook, Instagram and LinkedIn. Use the official conference hashtag, #FIO19, for increased engagement.  Also remember to download the FiO Conference App.

Perhaps some of the greatest value of FiO + LS, however, cannot be found in the program. This conference is an opportunity to meet with friends and colleagues, share research and new technologies, experiences, network, build linkages and learn where the field is headed.
