Technical Programming
Paper presentations from leading researchers around the world are divided into nine topical areas in optics, from biology and medicine to information science. A sample of highlighted presentations includes:

Special symposia organized by hot topic areas in the field include:

Symposium on the 100th Anniversary of the Bohr Atom: Niels Bohr's Nutcracker
Oct. 6, 4 – 6 p.m.
Bonnet Creek Ballroom, Salons I-III, Hilton Bonnet Creek

In July 1913, Niels Bohr transformed the understanding of light and matter.  Though his simple idea seems obvious to us today, it was unprecedented at the time: take the quantization rule that Planck and Einstein had used to describe the energy of light, and apply it to the mechanical motion of particles in atoms.  Although his specific atomic model was superseded by quantum mechanics, Bohr’s basic concept endures and is often a useful guide to understanding new aspects of atomic, molecular and optical physics.

Symposium on Photonics for Quantum Information Processing
Oct. 7, 1:30 – 3:15 p.m., 4:00 – 6:00 p.m.
Bonnet Creek Ballroom, Salon VII, Hilton Bonnet Creek

The theme of the Symposium focuses on photonic components and architectures for a quantum information processing network. Topics include quantum optics techniques for storing, manipulating, and detecting photonic qubits, such as quantum frequency conversion; single-photon pulse shaping; atomic and solid-state quantum memories; hybrid quantum-information systems; fiber and on-chip waveguide quantum information systems; optomechanics for quantum information.

Symposium on Functional Imaging of Visual Systems
October 8, 1:30 – 3:30 p.m., 4 – 5:30 p.m.
Bonnet Creek Ballroom, Salon X, Hilton Bonnet Creek

Understanding the process of vision is critical for our understanding of normal ocular function and its malfunction in disease. New techniques are making possible in vivo analysis of retinal function. In addition to discussing the cutting-edge optical techniques required, this symposium highlights their important scientific findings.

Symposium on Advanced Distributed Optical Fiber Sensor Systems for Security and Safety Applications
Oct. 9, 8 – 10 a.m., 10:30 a.m. – 12 p.m., 1:30 – 3:30 p.m.
Bonnet Creek Ballroom, Salon X, Hilton Bonnet Creek

Distributed optical fiber sensors are becoming key technologies for security and safety in strategic industrial and civil sectors such as energy production, railway and roadway transportation, and health monitoring large civil and industrial infrastructures. This symposium will focus on recent developments in distributed sensing measurement techniques, representing the most advanced progress in the field, including recent research and industrial developments.

Post-Deadline Papers
Oct. 9, 6:30 – 8 p.m.
Rooms vary, Hilton Bonnet Creek

The FiO 2013 Technical Program Committee accepts a limited number of post-deadline papers for presentation. The purpose of post-deadline sessions is to give attendees the opportunity to hear the newest breakthroughs in rapidly advancing areas. Only those papers judged to be truly excellent and compelling in their timeliness were accepted.

Special Events
