Optica Special Events at Frontiers in Optics + Light Science

Rochester, New York – The Frontiers in Optics + Laser Science (FiO LS) will be presented in-person and online from 16-20 October in Rochester, New York. This approach will accommodate speakers and attendees from across the globe with in-person and on-demand content. FiO 2022 is managed by Optica and locally organized by a dedicated committee of volunteers: FiO 2022 Committee. At FiO 2022, Optica members can participate in networking events and visit the Optica booth (1407).

“Hosting our annual meeting in Rochester is a homecoming for Optica,” said Genaro Monantez, Chief Membership Engagement Officer, Optica. “We’ve curated special events for our members of all career levels to make their on-site experience at FIO memorable and career-impacting. We look forward to an enjoyable week with members joining from around the world.”

 

Optica Laser Systems Technical Group Campfire Session

Optica Technical Group on Laser Systems will bring a campfire session featuring Dr. Gregory Quarles, CEO, President and Board member for Tucson-based Applied Energetics, Inc. In his talk, Dr. Quarles will present "From Laser Materials to Ultrashort Pulse Lasers and Applications - An Overview of 40 years as an Optica Member." After the talk, the remainder of the session will be open for discussion with Dr. Quarles.

LS Undergraduate Symposium

The Symposium on Undergraduate research has been a feature of the annual meeting of the Division of Laser Science of the American Physical Society (APS-DLS) for sixteen years. It showcases the research of more than 500 students during that time. Students' presentations often describe their work during the previous summer. The NSF has played a vital role by providing research opportunities for many students through its REU programs and directly supporting the event. The symposium has been generously supported by the DLS, Optica, NSF, SPS, and the University of Maryland, College Park (JQI), and corporate sponsors Thorlabs, Photonics Industries, East Coast Optical Technologies, and Bristol Instruments.

Technology Showcase: Deployable Optical Frequency Combs and Laser Modules for Next-Generation Quantum Sensors

Optical frequency combs have been instrumental in the fields of optical atomic clocks, low phase noise microwave generation, precision LIDAR, and dual-comb spectroscopy. Representatives of Vescent Photonics, LLC, will discuss new designs for fieldable, low-SWaP optical frequency combs and other useful laser modules aimed at deployable quantum sensors.

A Day in the Life of an Industrial Scientist from Early to Late Career

The Optical Material Studies Technical Group invites will lead a panel discussion exploring careers as an industrial scientist or engineer. After the panel, attendees are welcome to learn more about their experiences in the industry.

 

Movie Night - Picture a Scientist

Join us for some popcorn and beer for movie night. PICTURE A SCIENTIST is a feature-length documentary film chronicling the groundswell of researchers writing a new chapter for women scientists. A biologist, a chemist, and a geologist lead viewers on a journey deep into their own experiences in the sciences, overcoming brutal harassment, institutional discrimination, and years of subtle slights to revolutionize the culture of science. From cramped laboratories to spectacular field stations, we also encounter scientific luminaries who provide new perspectives on how to make science itself more diverse, equitable, and open to all.

 

PIC Design and Optical System Simulation Workshop

Attend this free workshop to gain knowledge and experience in the photonic design workflow from devices to systems. In this workshop, learn how to automate the design of photonic integrated circuits (PICs) and simulate high-speed optical transmission systems.  Attendees will be guided through the various levels of abstraction by a team of experts using VPIphotonics Design Suite. This workshop includes software access and a 4-hour in-person session of lectures, guided labs, and independent work with 1-on-1 support.
