The panel, organized by the Optica Environmental Sensing Technical Group, will explore how optics and photonics are reshaping environmental monitoring and Earth science. It will cover advances in fiber-optic sensing, spectroscopy, LiDAR, IR, hyperspectral imaging, and integrated photonic platforms across applications such as climate, water, atmosphere, surface monitoring, oceanography, climate resilience, and natural hazards. Recent progress in sensitivity, resolution, communication, and data integration has enabled detection of subtle environmental changes, while challenges remain in calibration, field deployment, and large-scale data management. Emerging directions include quantum-enhanced sensors, chip-scale devices, and AI-driven analysis to expand capabilities further. The session will convene experts in optics, photonics, and environmental science to critically review technological opportunities, identify methodological challenges, and discuss collaborative strategies for advancing next-generation environmental sensing. Optica Members Only.
