Frontiers in Optics + Laser Science Conference Transitions to an All-Virtual Event

Distinguished speakers and presenters to provide insights on emerging technologies

WASHINGTON – The 2021 Frontiers in Optics + Laser Science (FiO+LS) conference, presented by the American Physical Society’s Division of Laser Science (DLS) and The Optical Society (OSA), has been transitioned to a web-conference, online format, 31 October – 04 November 2021. The new format allows for a more inclusive and safe experience for all attendees.

This year’s technical program and exhibition leverages the intersection between science and applications within three conference themes: Autonomous Systems, Machine Learning and Virtual Reality and Augmented Vision. In addition to these cutting-edge presentations, FiO+LS features invited speakers, special events, dynamic poster presentations and two engaging plenary speakers.

“An all-virtual conference will enable us to showcase the latest innovations in optics and photonics in an inclusive environment,” said Claudio Mazzali, Corning Inc., USA, FiO General Chair. “We are excited to engage the community with robust technical content, product demonstrations and dynamic networking sessions with live and on-demand presentations.”

“The exchange of laser science interests among students, early career professionals, researchers and industry leaders is central to the ongoing development of our field,” said Richard Averitt, University of California, San Diego, USA, Laser Science General Chair. “We welcome the opportunity to present this conference virtually to encourage greater accessibility and global participation.”

In his talk titled, “Fourier Transforms and Fourier Optics with Mathematica™,” Joseph Goodman, William Ayer Professor Emeritus, Stanford University, USA, will describe the purpose and use of the Mathematica program. Goodman will cover his approach and lessons learned in utilizing Mathematica as a tool to teach both Fourier transforms and Mathematica simultaneously.

Anne L’Huillier, Professor, Lund University, Sweden, will explore the use of attosecond pulses in investigating fast electron dynamics in atomic photoionization. In her talk titled, “From Extreme Nonlinear Optics to Ultrafast Atomic Physics,” L’Huillier is set to demonstrate the physics and performance of high-order harmonics or trains of attosecond pulses deriving from the interaction of atoms with intense laser radiation.

Plenary presentations will take place 02 and 03 November.

Visionary speakers include Paul Debevec, Director of Research, Creative Algorithms and Technology, Netflix, USA; Keith Nelson, Haslam and Dewey Professor of Chemistry, Massachusetts Institute of Technology, USA; Ana Maria Rey, NIST and JILA Fellow, Associate Research Professor, University of Colorado at Boulder, USA; Eli Yablonovitch; Professor, University of California Berkeley, USA; and Jiangying Zhou, Program Manager, Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency, USA.
