Leading to a Practical Quantum Computer

Quantum computers are capable of solving some computational problems that are believed to be intractable using conventional computers. Recent progress in the development of high quality quantum bits and their successful manipulation have led to significant confidence that a moderate scale quantum computers can be constructed on leading physical platforms such as trapped ions and superconducting circuits. On Monday, Jungsang Kim answered the question -- what will lead us to a practical quantum computer? In Monday’s presentation, he explained the prospect of constructing a scalable quantum processor via trapped ytterbium ions and the progress made to date. By leveraging the latest optical technology -- micro-fabricated ion traps, optical micro-machines, advanced optical modulators and laser systems – Kim’s presentation moved us forward to the ultimate goal; a scalable quantum computer.
He summarized by showing the audience the latest progress towards deployable ion traps, and the integration of the vacuum system requirements with the laser and optical system requirements. All of this could lead to a full ion trap quantum computer in a box while sharing his vision on what scientists could do with quantum computing systems that are comprised of over 50 qubits and greater than 1000 gates, possibly as soon as 2020.
